Archival Connections Speakers Series: Dr. Jonathan Swainger
Tuesday January 30, 2018  |  4:30 PM - 5:30 PM
Canfor Theatre, UNBC, 3333 University Way

Join us for an Archival Connections Speaker Series event, "We Were Just So Proud": Recalling the Birth of a University in Documents and Oral History.

Depending on who was asked, the origins of UNBC recalled a long battle without any assurance of success, recollections of profound satisfaction, or deserved pride tinged with frustration and a sense of lost opportunity. Not only are there multiple histories of the grassroots movement that led to UNBC's creation, but the documentary and oral histories leave discordant accounts of what was expected and eventually accomplished. Informed by almost four years of work in research and writing Aspiration: A History of the University of Northern British Columbia to 2015, author Jonathan Swainger reflects on various collisions between the documentary history and the recollections of those involved in the university's genesis. It is a topic illuminating the power of remembrance at the core of what many believed was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

This free event, presented by UNBC’s Northern BC Archives & Special Collections and Office of Research and Graduate Programs, will be held on Tuesday, January 30, 2018 from 4:30pm to 5:30pm in UNBC’s Canfor Theatre. For more information contact Ramona Rose at 250-960-6603 or email archives@unbc.ca.
