Big Fancy & The Shiddy Cowboys with Patchwork
Saturday November 16, 2019  |  9:00 PM - 11:30 PM
Legion 43 PG, 1116 6thy avenue

Invoking the masters of old time, country, blues, and ragtime, Big Fancy roams the land, a true troubadour moonshiner with a sharp wit and love-lorn voice.
Patchwork is a 3 piece band hailing from Prince George made up of Brock Paciejewski on guitar and vocals, Mike Watson on banjo and vocals, and Warren Neuvonen on fiddle. Their music is inspired by folk, country, and Canadiana/Americana, of both the present and the past. Their original work is strongly influenced by life in northern B.C., and through their songs they tell stories of harrowing misadventures in the wilderness, lost love, and lessons learned along the way.

In My Own Moccasins Book Launch
Sunday November 17, 2019  |  1:00 PM - 3:30 PM
Artspace at Books & company, 1685 3rd avenue

A nationally bestselling book on the struggle of addiction and the power of Indigenous resilience.

Helen Knott, a highly accomplished Indigenous woman, seems to have it all. But in her memoir, she offers a different perspective. In My Own Moccasins is an unflinching account of addiction, intergenerational trauma, and the wounds brought on by sexual violence. It is also the story of sisterhood, the power of ceremony, the love of family, and the possibility of redemption.

With gripping moments of withdrawal, times of spiritual awareness, and historical insights going back to the signing of Treaty 8 by her great-great grandfather, Chief Bigfoot, her journey exposes the legacy of colonialism, while reclaiming her spirit.

Adult Speaker Series: Mountains of Change
Monday November 18, 2019  |  6:45 PM - 8:30 PM
The Exploration Place, 333 Becott Place

Mountains are the proverbial canary in the coal mine when it comes to climate change, and the impacts of climate change on high elevation regions will be felt far downstream. Mountain glaciers and snowpacks are critical sources of seasonal streamflow and soil moisture. Mountains provide unique habitats and ecological niches, and support a huge range of biodiversity. And mountains are seeing some of the greatest rates of warming observed on the planet. This talk will focus on ongoing and future research in mountains both near and far, identify how and why mountains are changing so fast, highlight the challenges in collecting data from high elevations, and hopefully generate a mountain of discussion.

Born and raised in Southwestern Ontario, Dr. Joseph Shea has moved from the Hamilton “Mountain” to conduct research on snow, ice, and water in mountain ranges around the planet. His research is focused on measuring and modelling the impact of climate change at high elevations, and the application of remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS, aka drones) and satellites for change detection. After completing his PhD in 2010 and conducting post-doctoral research at UNBC, he spent 4 years in Nepal with his family working in the Himalayas before returning to Prince George. When he’s not parenting three fantastic kids he trail runs, mountain bikes, and skis, and can be occasionally seen around town performing with his band The Ebbs.
