Caledonia Ramblers Hike
Sunday September 15, 2019

The Caledonia Ramblers will be leading a hike up the Raven Lake trail on Sunday, September 15.
It's rated moderate with a distance of about 9.5 kilometres round trip and an elevation gain of 450 metres. The hike should take about three hours plus lunch and stops.

The trail leads to an open meadow and a view of Suzie's Peak then on to Raven Lake. It's also a chance to get a look at the new Raven Lake cabin, although it remains closed for the time-being while finishing touches are completed.

It can be both windy and rainy in the area and the weather can change quickly. Hikers must be equipped for the elements and should carry daypacks with the appropriate clothing as well as lunch, snacks and a warm drink. Gaiters, hiking poles, sunscreen, bear spray and perhaps insect repellent are also worthwhile.

Meet at the city hall parking lot 10 minutes before the 8 a.m. scheduled departure time. The carpool fee is $10 and the trailhead is 115 kilometres east of Prince George. For more information go to caledoniaramblers.ca.

September Adult Speaker Series:
(Due to unforeseen circumstances, Dr. Venter had to reschedule from her original date of Jan 14)

Discovering the Forests through the people in Papua New Guinea
Dr. Michelle Venter, Post-Doctoral researcher, University of Northern British Columbia

Michelle’s work in ecology has allowed her to lead field expeditions in remote locations including the Australian Outback, Bering Sea and tropical forests of Papua New Guinea. She studies the relationship between forest carbon, climatic, and abiotic variables. Her research also involved exploring novel forest management practices that engage local people while improving their livelihoods. She currently works at UNBC as a Post-Doctoral researcher.

The rugged geography responsible for the outstanding cultural and biological diversity of Papua New Guinea (PNG) also presents a formidable barrier for access to the region. As a result, PNG remains one of the world’s most under-researched countries. Considerable investments into forest management for climate mitigation are now demanding an improved understanding of the state of these forests and the management options for protecting or restoring them. To help fill this information need, Michelle led seven expeditions in forests far from roads and villages with the help of over 70 local assistants from five forest-dependent communities, working on extremely steep slopes. Through this work, the tallest trees yet recorded at extreme altitudes and carbon-rich montane forests were discovered. Her research underlines the importance of including local Indigenous knowledge in forest management when people depend on these forests for subsistence.
