Emma Cook live at Nancy O's
Thursday April 19, 2018  |  8:30 PM
Nancy O's, 1261 3rd Ave

BY DONATION

2016 FACTOR Juried Sound Recording recipient Emma Cook combines a powerful and haunting voice reminiscent of Sarah McLachlan with the song stylings of Feist or Jenn Grant. She also knows what it means to struggle. The Toronto indie-pop singer was well on her way to making a name for herself before a falling tree branch caused a serious head injury and forced her to take a hiatus from music to focus on recovery. After a three year battle with Post-Concussive Syndrome, Emma drew 2016 to a close with the release of her third album ‘Same Old Song, produced by Mitch Girio (Emma-Lee’s Never Just a Dream). The cover of Same Old Song shows a single tree branch, an ode to the artist's ongoing fight to recover from her injuries and the power of music to get us through the hardest of times. Same Old Song debuted at #3 on the folk charts in Edmonton and landed Emma a synch licensing deal with Community Tree Music in Vancouver.

Before her injury, Emma had logged over 100 shows across Canada, the US and the UK and had official showcases at NXNE, CMW & Indie Week. She was a 2008 Toronto Independent Music Awards nominee and received an Ontario Arts Council grant to record her second album “Hit & Run.” Written and co-produced by Emma, both of her albums have garnered fantastic reviews and sought the attention of campus radio, CBC and the Verge on XM Satellite Radio. The Ontario Arts Council again backed the young artist, awarding her an International touring grant which took her from Toronto down to Mississippi and back in Feb and March 2009, with stops at SXSW, and NYC’s famed Bitter End.

In early 2016 Emma began writing songs again. “They just started pouring out of me” she said, “I was channeling all of the loss and frustration, all of the pain and hardship of the last few years.” Thanks to a highly competitive FACTOR grant, Emma has just finished recording her fourth studio album LIVING PROOF with producer Dean Drouillard (Royal Wood). Look for the first single “I Will Stay” in early November, coinciding with her official showcase at Toronto’s Indie Week. Emma will be hitting the road in 2018 to promote her new record.

Jeff Adams Keynote // Paralympian & World Champion
Thursday April 19, 2018  |  7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Prince George Civic Center, 1598 6th Avenue

Jeff Adams // Paralympian and World Champion

Hear from Paralympian and World Champion Jeff Adams as he takes you through his keynote: One Step at a Time. This engaging speech will talk about setting unrealistic goals, and achieving them. Whether it's climbing the CN Tower in a wheelchair, winning a gold medal at the Paralympics, or being the best in business, the process to ensure success is the same.

BIO:
For Jeff Adams, a wheelchair is a vehicle for success. This five-time Paralympian and six-time World Champion in wheelchair sports is living proof that focus, determination, and spirit are the keys to achieving “gold medal” dreams. Combining his unique understanding of life’s challenges with his experience as a world-class athlete, Jeff synthesises his experience in sport, government, and business into messages that show how the path to success is often the same, regardless of the goal that is being pursued.

The Sweet Lowdown concert
Friday April 20, 2018  |  7:30 PM
Knox United Church, 1448 - 5th Ave

With the rough waters of the Pacific around them and the wilds of the Canadian North above them, THE SWEET LOWDOWN have developed original acoustic roots music that draws from earth and sky. As such, you’ll hear influences as far-ranging as Celtic jigs, contemporary pop, Appalachian fiddling, and that particularly Canadian blend of driving tradition and ground-breaking originality. The Sweet Lowdown group draws from these styles, but is not beholden to them, instead blazes a new trail with original songwriting and innovative instrumentals.
Opening the show will be three of the finest young fiddlers to come out of Prince George in recent years. Chloe Nakahara, Brittany Iwanciwski and Ariel Logan will be sure to kick things of in style! Sponsored by the BC Old Time Fiddlers. Tickets are $20 and are available through the BC Old Time Fiddlers and Books and Company. Sponsored by the BC Old Time Fiddlers.

Billie Zizi and Special Guests
Saturday April 21, 2018  |  9:00 PM
Legion, 1116 6th Avenue

If you’ve ever spiraled through the heaviness and lightness of love, then you can get behind Billie Zizi’s new album Moon of Honey (2016). This tour-de-force carries all the agonies and ecstasies of all those late night spent alone in your room waiting for your lover to call. Her sound is heady mix of dirty-soul-indie-jazz-pop—and these tracks give off serious bedroom vibes.

Billie Zizi was born on April 4th 1989 in dusty Edmonton, Alberta to a fiddle player (Cam Neufeld) and an abstract painter (Marianne Watchel). Taught to live and breathe art from a young age, Zizi took notes from her father on music-making and learnt how to paint from her mother. After high school, Zizi went to Grant MacEwan University for music, graduating in 2009. Zizi has traveled the world—living, working, and traveling through West Africa, Asia, Europe. In 2010, she did a busking tour with her father that began in Turkey, moved through Eastern Europe, and ended in France where they attended Samois, a festival in celebration of Django Reinhardt.

In 2015, Zizi received a 10k20 Ralwco Recording Grant and, that same year, successfully released her first studio album Gun Metal Dress. In Penguin Eggs, Tom Murray enthusiastically describes it as “a fine first album, laying down ground work for what will no doubt be one of the country’s most inventive voices for years to come.” Her side projects include work on The Gadjo Collective, The Black Wonders, Gypsy Jive, and Jive is Dead. Zizi lists her musical influences as her dad, insomnia, and love. She still likes to paint and she creates her own album art. Notable festival appearances include Ness Creek Music Festival (Big River), Alianate Arts Festival (Iqaluit Nunavut), North Country Fair (Driftpile), Sasquatch Gathering (Rangeton Park), The WorksFestival (Edmonton), Heart of the City Music Festival (Edmonton), Road to Django (Grand Prairie), Artists on the Rail (VIA Rail), Wild Mountain Music Festival (Hinton), South Country Fair (Fort Macloud).

Zizi’s work has low-key obsessive quality. Her layered, cyclical sounds give the impression of someone whose thoughts are on repeat. Speaking about her process, Zizi remarks, “Looping is unwieldy…It can really go south on you. I’ve been lost in a terrifying loopland before.” Listening to Moon of Honey, there is nothing terrifying about this loopland—Zizi has brawled with her demons and created a lush country of sound out of them. Freedom of the City Parade
Saturday April 21, 2018  |  10:30 AM
Downtown (starts at 150 Brunswick Street, down 2nd Avenue and along George street to City Hall and Canada Games Plaza)

The parade begins at the Kopar Building on 150 Brunswick Street and proceeds down 2nd Avenue to George Street and then to City Hall and the Canada Games Plaza.

City to bestow Freedom of City upon Rocky Mountain Rangers

Parade, ceremony, and banquet on April 21

Unlike the awarding of Freedom of the City to other worthy individuals or organizations, bestowing the distinction to a military unit has associated traditions dating back hundreds of years to the days when military units were not allowed to enter cities at night without the permission of the local government.

Consequently, the granting of Freedom of the City to the Rocky Mountain Rangers will involve a ‘March to City Hall’ on the morning of Saturday, April 21, followed by a ceremony in front of City Hall, and a special dinner that evening at the Prince George Conference and Civic Centre. The parade will include members of the local RCMP who will formally “allow passage” of the Regiment into the city, a formal knocking on the door of City Hall by the Commanding Officer of the Regiment, and an official inspection of the troops by Mayor Hall. Lieutenant-General Paul Wynnyk, Commander of the Canadian Army, will also be in attendance at the events.

The parade will begin at about 10:25am at the Kopar Building at 150 Brunswick Street and proceed down 2nd Avenue to George Street. From there, the Regiment will march down George Street to the Cenotaph at City Hall where the ceremonies will commence. Following the ceremonies, the parade will continue on to Canada Games Plaza before returning down Brunswick Street and disbanding at the Kopar Building.

About the event

The City of Prince George is bestowing Freedom of the City, the highest award Council can bestow upon a citizen or organization, upon the Rocky Mountain Rangers.

"This award is Council’s highest honour and recognizes exceptional merit and contribution," says Lyn Hall, Mayor of Prince George. "Granting of this distinction recognizes the Rocky Mountain Rangers’ history, presence in our community, and contributions both locally and nationally. On behalf of Council, I would like to congratulate and thank the Rangers for their contributions to Prince George and to Canada."

The Rocky Mountain Rangers are a Primary Reserve infantry regiment of the Canadian Armed Forces based at JR Vicars Armoury in Kamloops. The Rangers train and provide infantry soldiers to meet the operational requirements of the Canadian Armed Forces. Prince George was previously home to “A” Company of the Rocky Mountain Rangers, but the Company was relocated in Kamloops in 1970. In 2011, “B” Company was activated in Prince George due in large part to efforts from citizen volunteers in Prince George dedicated to bringing the Army back to Prince George following its 41-year absence.

“B” Company currently includes about 60 citizen-soldiers, many of whom recently served in “Operation LENTUS,” the Canadian Armed Forces’ operation to bring relief and assistance to the communities affected by 2017’s devastating Cariboo wildfires. Previously, the City of Prince George also bestowed Freedom of the City upon the Royal Canadian Army Cadets Corps, which maintains an affiliation with the Rocky Mountain Rangers.

“Receiving the Freedom of a City is the most prestigious honour a Regiment can receive from a City – it is symbolic of the trust and partnership held between our Regiment and the City of Prince George,” says Lieutenant-Colonel Normand Dionne, Commanding Officer of the Rocky Mountain Rangers. “The soldiers of Prince George and the Regiment as a whole are extremely proud to receive this recognition.”
