Archival Connections Speakers Series: Dr. Jonathan Swainger
Tuesday January 30, 2018  |  4:30 PM - 5:30 PM
UNBC, Small Lecture Theatre Agora (Room 7-152), 3333 University Way

Join us for an Archival Connections Speaker Series event, "We Were Just So Proud": Recalling the Birth of a University in Documents and Oral History, presented by the Northern BC Archives & Special Collections and the Office of Research and Graduate Programs.

The free event runs on Tuesday, January 30, 2018 from 4:30pm to 5:30pm in the UNBC Small Lecture Theatre Agora (Room 7-152). For more information contact Ramona Rose at 250-960-6603 or email archives@unbc.ca.

Depending on who was asked, the origins of UNBC recalled a long battle without any assurance of success, recollections of profound satisfaction, or deserved pride tinged with frustration and a sense of lost opportunity. Not only are there multiple histories of the grassroots movement that led to UNBC's creation, but the documentary and oral histories leave discordant accounts of what was expected and eventually accomplished. Informed by almost four years of work in research and writing Aspiration: A History of the University of Northern British Columbia to 2015, author Jonathan Swainger reflects on various collisions between the documentary history and the recollections of those involved in the university's genesis. It is a topic illuminating the power of remembrance at the core of what many believed was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Dr. Jonathan Swainger is a Professor of History at the University of Northern British Columbia and has written on national and regional legal history topics. This work includes a book-length history of the early years of the Canadian Department of Justice, three edited essay collections, a number of article-length projects, and the 2016 history of UNBC's funding. His current work concentrates on crime and community identity in Northern British Columbia.

Artist on Display: Randall Heppner @ Cafe Voltaire
Wednesday January 31, 2018
Cafe Voltaire, 1685 3rd Avenue

Randall Heppner is a self-taught artist from Prince George in northern British Columbia. Randall lives and creates art in his home where he finds comfort and inspiration in the nature surrounding this area. Growing up with a mother who was an artist, Randall was exposed to the arts for as long as he can remember. In his early 20's, he started painting and experimenting with colour, using distinctive methods, and different mediums from oil and watercolour to charcoal, pencils, and pastels - honing his self-taught skills and mastering his one-of-a-kind style. With his unique eye for colour, Randall's signature style consists of bright, colour-inspired pieces depicting the nature and seasons of northern BC. Randall produces a handful of remarkable pieces each year that capture the north and connect his viewers to the place he calls home.
Times may vary when Randall is painting.

Caledonia Ramblers full-moon snowshoe
Wednesday January 31, 2018

The Caledonia Ramblers are hosting a full-moon snowshoe along the Backside trail in the Greenway trail system, on Wednesday, January 31.
The trip is rated easy and take about two hours.
Participants should bring a headlamp, a day backpack, sufficient water or perhaps something hot to drink, snacks or perhaps something more substantial to eat, extra warm clothing, gaiters and hiking poles. They should also consider bringing ice-cleats (grippers) if recent temperatures have been hovering around zero.

Coldsnap Week: Boogie Woogie Gypsy Jazz and Blues
Wednesday January 31, 2018  |  7:30 PM
Prince George Playhouse, 2833 Recreation Place

Coldsnap Music Festival is back for another year! Enjoy this evening's concert featuring Blue Moon Marquee and A.J. Croce.
Tickets are $30 and available online or at Books and Company and Studio 2880.

Blue Moon Marquee is a Gypsy Blues band born of the wild rose foothills of Alberta, but currently make their home in an island shack on the coast of the Salish Sea, British Columbia.

A.W. Cardinal (vocals/guitar) and Jasmine Colette a.k.a. Badlands Jass (vocals/bass/drums) write and perform original compositions influenced by anything that swings, jumps or grooves.

Artists such as Lonnie Johnson, Louis Armstrong, Blind Willie Jonson, Charley Patton, Howlin’ Wolf, Screaming Jay Hawkins, Tom Waits, Memphis Minnie, and Django Reinhardt are deeply infused in the soul of their music. Blue Moon Marquee is primarily a live duo with the energy and sound of a full band. Colette, the rhythm section, not only commands the upright bass but also brings the swing with her feet on the kick drum, snare and high hat, all while singing harmonies. Cardinal is of the screaming and hollering blues ilk with distinctive thick and smoky vocals that barrel out like a raging bull. His guitar crackles with the swinging energy of jazz tinged blues.

According to Willie Nelson, “A.J. Croce has wisdom beyond his years. With his music, he represents his generation with a profound sense of honesty in his lyrics and quality in his delivery. The future of entertainment is safe in his hands!”

A.J. Croce has been inextricably linked to a version of his own story by virtue of his name. He’s experienced a lifetime of comparisons to a father he lost at age two, whose music bears little resemblance to his own output yet still serves as a reference point despite the years that have passed and the many iconic mentors who have stepped in to offer their counsel, creativity, and endorsement throughout his long career.

It’s curious that it now feels necessary to include the reference, as enough time has passed that a new generation of tastemakers and journalists might not know who Jim Croce was — that he was a golden-voiced everyman, a singer-songwriter-guitarist who died too soon, leaving one of pop music’s most beautiful and memorable ballads (written about a young A.J.) in his wake.

Croce the younger, on the other hand, is a piano man, first and foremost, and a vocal stylist second. His muted growl pulls from a host of American traditions and anti-heroes — it’s part New Orleans, part juke joint, part soul, but somehow evokes New York, a continuum where John Lurie meets Lou Reed. He is further a songwriter, driven by a personal muse, informed by a life on a boomerang of tragedy.
