Coldsnap Week: Small Pipes and Big Voices
Friday February 2, 2018  |  7:30 PM
Prince George Playhouse, 2833 Recreation Place

Coldsnap Music Festival is back for another year! This evening's concert features Ben Miller and Anita MacDonald, Madison Violet, and a local opener (TBA).
Tickets are $30 and available online or at Books and Company or Studio 2880.

Ben Miller and Anita MacDonald join together, blending the rich traditional sound of the Cape Breton fiddle, with the fiery edge of the Scottish Border pipes. Combining their creative vision with influences from Old and New World Gaelic traditions, they create a powerful sound, heralded as “One of the most important folk acts on Cape Breton Island today.”  – CBC Main Street (Nova Scotia, CAN). Since meeting at the 2013 Celtic Colours Festival, Ben and Anita have toured across North America and further afield, wowing audiences with their captivating blend of driving dance tunes and soulful Gaelic airs.

Over the years, Madison Violet (Brenley MacEachern and Lisa MacIsaac) have acquired many accolades, including a Juno nomination, a Canadian Folk Music Award for Best Vocal Group Album of the Year and a Critic’s Choice award from Country Music People’s Magazine. Their songs have received a mass of acclaim from outlets such as the BBC, the CBC, Maverick Magazine and NPR, and have earned the duo the Grand Prize in the 2010 Maxell John Lennon Song Writing Contest. Madison Violet were on Germany’s WDR’s list of ‘Best Bands of All Time’ as well as having song placements on various television shows. Their recent single ‘These Ships’ was released on one of the largest dance labels in the U.S., Ultra Records, and has garnered over 1,000,000 plays on Spotify already. Brenley and Lisa are singer-songwriters, multi-instrumentalists, harmonizers, dog lovers, nature walkers, painters, tennis fanatics, amateur chefs. They have been described as pop, roots, indie, dance and Americana, but think that this quote sums them up best…”Madison Violet has suddenly appeared like a ray of sunshine on a rainy day.”

Come early to settle down with a tasty craft beer and to ensure you have a spot!

Doors @ 8pm – 19+ – $10 Cover

::Tiger Moon::
Tiger Moon is a West Canadian Folk band – a healthy blend of Bluegrass and Country, with feet still planted deep in the mud of the Folk world. Led by the couple Dan Tait and Kasey Graff, their sound is unique and timeless, stylistically comparable to Johnny Cash & June Carter. Syrupy-sweet 4-part harmonies fortify the pair as well as a full rhythm & bass backline, providing a full-bodied sound for their at-once intimate and exciting performances.

The band is coming off a career-high year in 2017, and will be hoping to continue this far into 2018. They performed over 50 shows in the summer of 2017 around BC & Alberta, released their first full-length album entitled Cariboo & Whiskey, and locked in performance slots at Salmon Arm Roots & Blues Festival, Ponderosa Festival, and Arts Wells. They bring a professional aspect to the touring-folk-band world, and are working to ensure they become threaded into the musical fabric of Western Canada.

Coldsnap Week: Electro-Traditional Dance Extravaganza
Saturday February 3, 2018  |  7:30 PM
Ramada Hotel Ballroom, 444 George Street

Coldsnap Music Festival is back for another year! Enjoy this concert featuring Mélisande and Ten Strings and a Goatskin.
Tickets are $30 and available online or at Studio 2880 and Books and Company.

Drawing from a rich heritage of traditional francophone songs, Mélisande unearths rare treasures that she adapts and presents with a feminist perspective and the distinctly modern sound of the band. Mélisande [électrotrad] offers an energetic blend of traditional music, pop and electro with a mix of acoustic and electric instruments, vocal harmonies and programming. Led by Mélisande and her husband Alexandre de Grosbois-Garand, the group offers a fresh artistic proposal to the folk-world-trad music scene. Its first album Les métamorphoses (La Prûche Libre, 2014), greatly acknowledged by the critics, won a Canadian Folk Music Award and an Independent Music Award as well a being nominated at ADISQ. Since the release of the album, the band performed over 50 concerts in Canada, the United States, France and Australia.

Age-old entertainments–sitting around the fire, telling tales–can take on ever-new faces. Young acoustic power trio Ten Strings and a Goat Skin from Canada’s Prince Edward Isle know this, transforming tradition with vigor, curiosity, and sparks of goofy humour. They’re inviting a new circle of listeners Auprès du Poêle (“around the woodstove”; release: June 12, 2016) for sometimes moody, sometimes high-energy set of original and traditional songs. Expanding on the Scottish and Acadian roots of PEI’s traditional music, Ten Strings and a Goatskin weave old-school Franco-Canadian, Breton, Irish, and Scottish tunes with wickedly current grooves and clever quirks, flirting with indie’s best moments.

Electric Avenue at UNBC Green Day
Tuesday February 6, 2018  |  10:00 AM - 3:00 PM
University of Northern British Columbia, 3333 University Way

Prince George is invited to experience Clean Energy Vehicles (CEV) on February 6th at UNBC's Green Day Celebrations.

CEVs are eco-options that can significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions, while providing the same features to their gas-fueled counterparts. British Columbia has the longest charging network in Canada that is steadily growing in regions, including the Northern B.C.

Happening on Green Day 2018 in partnership with the University of Northern British Columbia, the Electric Avenue is the perfect opportunity to learn more about the provincial CEVforBCTM incentive program, ask questions, and see a CEV up close.

For more information on CEVforBC™, visit: https://www.cevforbc.ca
