Coldsnap Week: East Coast Kitchen Party
Friday January 26, 2018  |  7:30 PM
Ramada Hotel Ballroom, 444 George Street

Coldsnap is back! Enjoy Prince George's annual winter music festival with excellent acts from around the world. Tickets are $30 and available online or from Studio 2880 or Books & Company.

Fearless front-woman Derina Harvey leads this Alberta-based five-piece Celtic-rock act, who offer an authentic east-coast experience with a fresh take on traditional tunes as well as their own original jigs and reels. Their rocky, rhythmic undertow is layered with guitars, fiddle, and topped by Derina’s powerful voice. These transplanted east-coasters have earned a reputation with their high-energy live show, leaving many an audience out-of- breath and hollering from their seats!

Few traditional Newfoundland bands have risen as quickly in the ranks as Rum Ragged. Formed by singer/guitarist Mark Manning and singer/accordion player Aaron Collis just two years ago, Rum Ragged has garnered respect from a loyal, ever-growing fan base as well as their musical peers. From spirited instrumentals to heartfelt ballads, they pay homage to the greats that came before them while carving out a fresh, unique sound of their own. While their pub shows have transformed into festival headlining gigs in a very short span of time, they are equally comfortable performing in both types of venues.

Coldsnap Week: Folk Rockin' it at the Ballroom
Saturday January 27, 2018  |  7:30 PM
Ramada Hotel Ballroom, 444 George Street

Coldsnap is back for another year! Enjoy excellent concerts and a great environment throughout the week. Tickets are $30 and available online or at Books and Company or Studio 2880. This evening's performances will be lead by Digging Roots and Scenic Route to Alaska.

Juno-winning First Nations power couple Shoshona Kish and Raven Kanatakta have built their sound on a unique musical marriage of unvarnished truth and unconditional love. Digging Roots’ new song and video AK-47 has both, in spades. AK-47 packs the punch of Digging Roots’ live anthem Hwy 17, adding the romantic optimism of For the Light, the title track of their most recent album. Like the latter video, AK-47 articulates an aesthetic deeply rooted in human love, but takes the approach to a new level.

Substance and accessibility are often considered opposing forces when it comes to pop music, making it all the more impressive when a band like Scenic Route to Alaska so effortlessly delivers ample doses of both.

The easygoing Edmonton-based trio, comprised of Trevor Mann on lead vocals and guitar, drummer Shea Connor, and bassist Murray Wood, effortlessly weaves catchy vocals and memorable melodies through rich arrangements – instantly engaging but begging to be heard again and again. It’s a coveted combination within the crowded sphere of indie rock – and one that’s rarely the product of anything but time, talent, and heaps of hard work. Of course, Scenic Route to Alaska are no strangers to any of those.

Coldsnap Week: Banjos and Cellos and Ukes, Oh My!
Sunday January 28, 2018  |  7:30 PM
Prince George Playhouse, 2833 Recreation Place

Coldsnap Music Festival is back for another year! Enjoy this concert with The Eisenhauers, James Hill and Anne Janelle, and an opening act by a local artist. Tickets are $30 and available online at Studio 2880 and Books & Company.

It has been said that all Canadian writing inevitably reflects the almost impenetrable vastness of the land and the great distances that separate us. If ‘The Road We Once Knew’ by the Eisenhauers, the husband and wife duo of Jeremy Eisenhauer and Sheree Plett Eisenhauer, is any indication, you’d be hard pressed not to come to the same conclusion about Canadian music. Simple, spare and heartbreaking in its directness, the concepts of distance, time and the wavering arcs of separation and reunion have rarely been as compellingly explored as they are in this powerful debut album. With its songs of loss, faith and the gratitude of renewal, ‘The Road We Once Knew’ is the perfect soundtrack for real people trying to live authentic lives.  Beautifully played, sung and executed, it is a testament to the healing power of music and the value of wisdom gained from experience.  The ‘Road We Once Knew’ is true soul music. Every word and note on it rings true.

Four strings and a favourite chocolate bar: that’s all James Hill (possibly the best ukulele player in the world) and Anne Janelle (a cellist of true beauty) had in common when they first met. It was more than enough. Today, they’re an award-winning, “utterly world-class” singer-songwriter-ukulele-cello duo (Paul Symes, The Blacksheep Inn). James grew up playing folk, jazz and blues on his ukulele while Anne was exclusively a classical cellist. But the pair’s differences quickly became their biggest asset. The uke is high, the cello is low; the uke plays short notes, the cello long bow strokes; the uke is all about strumming while the cello radiates melody. Like shadows and light in an old photograph, these contrasts are complementary. “We’re like a pair of dancers who can’t step on each other’s feet,” jokes James.

Coldsnap Week: Boogie Woogie Gypsy Jazz and Blues
Wednesday January 31, 2018  |  7:30 PM
Prince George Playhouse, 2833 Recreation Place

Coldsnap Music Festival is back for another year! Enjoy this evening's concert featuring Blue Moon Marquee and A.J. Croce.
Tickets are $30 and available online or at Books and Company and Studio 2880.

Blue Moon Marquee is a Gypsy Blues band born of the wild rose foothills of Alberta, but currently make their home in an island shack on the coast of the Salish Sea, British Columbia.

A.W. Cardinal (vocals/guitar) and Jasmine Colette a.k.a. Badlands Jass (vocals/bass/drums) write and perform original compositions influenced by anything that swings, jumps or grooves.

Artists such as Lonnie Johnson, Louis Armstrong, Blind Willie Jonson, Charley Patton, Howlin’ Wolf, Screaming Jay Hawkins, Tom Waits, Memphis Minnie, and Django Reinhardt are deeply infused in the soul of their music. Blue Moon Marquee is primarily a live duo with the energy and sound of a full band. Colette, the rhythm section, not only commands the upright bass but also brings the swing with her feet on the kick drum, snare and high hat, all while singing harmonies. Cardinal is of the screaming and hollering blues ilk with distinctive thick and smoky vocals that barrel out like a raging bull. His guitar crackles with the swinging energy of jazz tinged blues.

According to Willie Nelson, “A.J. Croce has wisdom beyond his years. With his music, he represents his generation with a profound sense of honesty in his lyrics and quality in his delivery. The future of entertainment is safe in his hands!”

A.J. Croce has been inextricably linked to a version of his own story by virtue of his name. He’s experienced a lifetime of comparisons to a father he lost at age two, whose music bears little resemblance to his own output yet still serves as a reference point despite the years that have passed and the many iconic mentors who have stepped in to offer their counsel, creativity, and endorsement throughout his long career.

It’s curious that it now feels necessary to include the reference, as enough time has passed that a new generation of tastemakers and journalists might not know who Jim Croce was — that he was a golden-voiced everyman, a singer-songwriter-guitarist who died too soon, leaving one of pop music’s most beautiful and memorable ballads (written about a young A.J.) in his wake.

Croce the younger, on the other hand, is a piano man, first and foremost, and a vocal stylist second. His muted growl pulls from a host of American traditions and anti-heroes — it’s part New Orleans, part juke joint, part soul, but somehow evokes New York, a continuum where John Lurie meets Lou Reed. He is further a songwriter, driven by a personal muse, informed by a life on a boomerang of tragedy.
