Brother Octopus: Live at Nancy O's
Thursday August 17, 2017  |  8:30 PM
Nancy O's, 1261 3rd Ave

$5 cover charge

Brother Octopus isn’t your typical cephalopod, he sometimes has the ability to take a human form and create musical compositions. Originally from the Pacific Ocean, Brother Octopus has assembled a team in Edmonton, Alberta Canada. The team consists of Little Guppy, Golden Boy, Dogfish, New Guy and Brother Octopus himself.
Since forming in 2011, Brother Octopus has been heavily involved within the Edmonton music scene. They’ve performed alongside notable artists such as Hollerado, Zerbin, Tupelo Honey and Rend. The band was featured in the popular publication Alternative Press Magazine, achieved various awards including "Artist To Watch" at the 2015 Edmonton Music Awards and even managed to reach #1 on the Canadian college radio charts.
Brother Octopus has been treading ahead with full force and no sign of stopping. They are very serious about their music and are committed to create a sound that appeals to their audience while having fun at the same time.

Carolyn Mark, Twin Peaks, and Kitty & The Rooster Live at the Legion
Thursday August 17, 2017  |  8:00 PM - 10:00 PM
The Legion, 1116 6th Avenue

Twin Peaks:
You don’t have to listen long to grasp the beauty in the blended voices of Western Canadian Music Award winning folk/roots duo Twin Peaks (Naomi Shore and Lindsay Pratt). But when you experience their live show you’ll realize that their music is about something much more captivating than just a catalogue of clever songs. It’s the expression of a rare kind of harmony that exists between their spirits – that’s what makes Twin Peaks so infectious and unforgettable.

Carolyn Mark:
I grew up on a dairy farm in Sicamous, BC with my Austrian father, my English mother and my Canadian brother. My father, an accomplished violinist, taught me how to play the piano when I was very young. He liked nothing better than to play duets with me for any visitors that happened by. Paying no heed to the musical tastes of the times or our guests, my father would perform for his hostages, launching into a favourite Dvorak or Chopin, poking me in the back with his bow if I appeared forgetful, shy or unenthused. Mortified, I longed for giant flames to eat the piano and my father.

I have since developed a more light-hearted relationship with music. My first band was The Vinaigrettes. We started as an all-girl foursome from Victoria and played together, in spite of a dizzying number of line-up changes, for seven years. We toured our pop - surf - punk - art - country - rock asses across Canada several times, but then, after a few years, Brigette, the smart one of the group, consulted an atlas and we started venturing South when we realized that Los Angeles was closer to Victoria than Edmonton - and the swimming was better! The Vinaigrettes recorded six albums, achieving a modest amount of obscurity, and broke up in 1998 due to "nervous indifference" and "creative exhaustion," vowing to "sue the industry for abandonment," and leaving dozens of fans mildly disappointed.

Exhausted and emotionally crushed by the failure of my first band and the ensuing two year bender, I attempted to find solace in the rehearsal spaces of other bands such as: Hat Head, The Fixin's, The Show Business Giants, The Metronome Cowboys, The Corn Sisters (a duo with label-mate Miss Neko Case), Monster Tweety, and Klugman. But eventually, while hiding under the bed at one of our neverending house parties, I decided to use my own name when I played. So far it's been a good idea - I'm not married to any one style of music, I can play solo or with a band depending on the money or my mood, and it's almost impossible for me to break up with myself. Those curious about my "sound" will just have to listen to the record I guess. If you are a newspaper sort who doesn't know what to say, I've never had a problem with the words "lovely and talented." Thank-you and goodnight.

Kitty & The Rooster:
Kitty & The Rooster is a rock n' roll duo from Vancouver, BC featuring Jodie Ponto banging on the cocktail kit and East Van guitar legend Noah Walker. They are known for their surf-tastic hooks, clever lyrics, and ridiculously fun shows.

Every Thursday at the Gallery offers free admission to all exhibitions. MakerLab Open Make Public drop-in is $5 and runs from 5-9p on Thursdays.

MakerLab 2RG is a gathering place! Both new and experienced makers can work on projects, access new technologies as well as traditional tools, and connect socially.  It is also a workspace for people who may not have their own.  MakerLab is a sounding board, a meeting place, a learning space, and a place to hang!  We call it a lab because we hope you'll experiment with your creativity, learn new skills, and be inspired by what other makers are creating, both in our own community and worldwide.

If you are a: crafter, coder, artist, fabricator, knitter, educator, scientist, geek, foodie, gardener, or something else altogether - this is the place for YOU! What everyone shares is a strong belief in the do-it-yourself spirit, a willingness to try something new, and a passion for making things.

Please note:  Two Rivers Gallery Members receive a 10% discount on all classes and workshops. Applicable taxes are charged on all programs.
