Rae Spoon Live @ Omineca
Saturday July 29, 2017  |  9:00 PM - 12:00 AM
Omineca Arts Centre, 1119 3rd ave

Tomorrow night, Rae Spoon live at Omineca!
Tickets $20 | Doors at 8pm | Music at 9pm
Rae Spoon is an award-winning Canadian musician, songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist and author, with eight solo albums spanning folk, indie rock and electronic genres with live shows that swing between audience singalongs and large danceable arrangements!
http://www.raespoon.com/
Rae was the subject and composer of the score for the National Film Board–produced musical-documentary My Prairie Home, which premiered at Sundance Film Festival in 2014. They have been nominated for two Polaris Prizes, a Lambda Literary Award, a Western Canadian Music Award, a CBC Radio 3 Bucky Award and a MOTHA Transgender Musician of the Year Award.
Armour, Spoon’s eighth solo album, is the highly anticipated follow-up to Polaris Prize–nominated My Prairie Home, a musical about Spoon’s fraught childhood in Alberta. As much as My Prairie Home was about Spoon’s upbringing as a queer youth in a Pentecostal household, Armour is about their view of the future. Moments of reckoning with trauma and self-preservation mingle with messages of hope and survival. Armour explores the idea that there is no instruction manual for healthy adulthood, asserting that the attempt to construct meaning is itself the point of life. The album is a tribute to the intimate space where both hope and despair have space to share the same voice. The ten new songs hold all of the lyrical depth indicative of Spoon’s compositions while showcasing their distinctive voice. Armour’s self- produced enigmatic soundscapes blur the lines between organic and electronic instruments. Analogue synthesizers, electronic drum programming, drum kits, percussion, electric bass, cello and guitar carry the album through pop refrains and danceable beats.
Rae’s first book, First Spring Grass Fire, was published by Arsenal Pulp Press in 2012. The book was a finalist for a Lambda Award in the Transgender Fiction category and was shortlisted for an Expozine Alternative Press Award. In the spring of 2014, Rae was awarded a Honour of Distinction by the Dayne Ogilvie Prize, presented by the Writers’ Trust of Canada. Rae’s second book, co- written with Ivan E. Coyote and titled Gender Failure, was published in 2014. Gender Failure was on the 2015 Over The Rainbow Reading List and was translated into German.

North of Familiar: Book Signing with Terry Milos
Monday July 3, 2017  |  11:00 AM - 2:00 PM
Books and Company, 1685 3rd Avenue

Come and meet Terry Milos the author of North of Familiar: A Woman’s Story of Homesteading and Adventure in the Canadian Wilderness. Hear about some of her adventures, ask questions and have her sign your book.

Book Info:
In 1974, Terry Milos moved to rural northern Canada to pursue her dream of homesteading. Following the seventies trend of the back-to-the-landers, she and her partner left the city life for what they imagined would be a simpler existence. Sometimes humorous and often insightful, North of Familiar is the story of a woman who learned to hunt, fish and live off the land in what most would consider an utterly hostile and unbelievably cold environment.

After a few months of cobbling together a living, Milos reluctantly left the north to further her education but with a dream of returning as a teacher. A year later she accepted a job in the small town of Atlin where she learned to expect the unexpected. Terry’s adventures in the north pushed her beyond the familiar as she applied her street savvy skills to negotiate a desolate mountain trail, or mush her dogs to school when the deep cold rendered her car useless. But there were also times when the unfamiliar became pure fear, such as when the pilot of a bush plane on which she was the only passenger fell asleep, sending the plane on a downward descent, or when a strange man was repeatedly seen lurking in the woods by Terry’s cabin after a trapper mysteriously went missing.

North of Familiar is about coming to grips with life in the bush far away from the luxuries of the city. In Carcross, Carmacks, Dawson City and Old Crow, Milos navigated the cultural differences between her urban upbringing and the communities of Canada’s Indigenous north. In spite of the harsh country, Terry survived and thrived, while raising a family and becoming a part of a strong and unique community. This story is not only entertaining and inspiring, it is also a story of joy, friendship and change.
