Naomi Kavka Live @ Oakroom Grill
Friday June 9, 2017  |  8:00 PM - 10:00 PM
Oakroom Grill, 1023 Central St W, Prince George

A year ago would have found Naomi Kavka perched behind her cello, performing as Principal Cellist of the Prince George Symphony Orchestra. This was
a devastating career choice, one that almost drove her to sell her cello, buy a rifle, and retreat into the deep northern wilderness that she was born into. But she was not ready to dive into the woods and disappear. That would be too easy.

On the remote islands of Haida Gwaii, on the traditional territory of the Haida Nation, Naomi assembled her band at Dogfish Cabin in October of 2016. Travelling from their collective home of Prince George BC, over the range of the coastal mountains and across Hecate Strait, they deftly set to work on creating an album at their cozy ad hoc studio. In one week, 10 songs were recorded, all penned by Naomi and expertly performed with the help of Justin Gendreau, Keith Roger, Patrick Kilcullen and Corbin Spensley. For that week they simply ate, drank, loved, and worked. Dogfish let them romance the
excitement and camaraderie felt in Big Pink, with the sonic vibes imagined in the Villa Nellcôte.

Reconciling Kavka’s personal musical catalogue into an album was an easy choice. Spanning
years of songwriting, the work is a collection of places, taking turns on the winding streets
of St John’s, speeding in the bullet trains of Japan, and resting upon the loving bosom of Northern British Columbia.

A voracious performer and songwriter, for years Naomi has performed extensively in BC and St. John's NL as a solo artist and in her alt-country band Pocket Knife, as well as in Power Duo, a folk-punk acoustic outfit with collaborator Corbin Spensley. She has shared the stage with such artists as Rae Spoon, Winona Wilde, the Burning Hell and Steve Maloney and released recent lead-ups to the current project, including "The Hay Fever EP" (March 2016) recorded in Koriyama, Japan, and Power Duo's self titled album (November 2015) which includes pared down versions of the songs now appearing with full band on her upcoming release.

Slated for release in the spring of 2017, her first full-length album is nearing completion. In the meantime Naomi and her band can be heard performing in and around Prince George.

Paint Your Clay Canada 150 Tile
Friday June 2, 2017  |  11:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Veterans' Plaza (City Hall), 1100 Patricia Blvd

The Prince George Potters' Guild, in conjunction with the City of Prince George, the CN Centre, and Canada 150 are creating a community tile installation project. We are inviting all members of our community to create an individual tile that will become part of this amazing public art project.

We are hoping that you will bring your talent to one of our many workshops – to paint a tile that expresses your connection to Prince George – something that is important to your life in our city. You might choose to paint an activity, an event, an animal, or something completely different. The choice will be yours. Your 4" x 4" tile will become part of a 9' x 20' patchwork mural that will be installed and unveiled at the CN Centre venue.
