Winter Activities

Prince George truly is a winter city and we celebrate all things snowy - there are no reasons to hibernate during the chillier months!

Looking for some serious outdoor action? Strap on a board or two and get powdered at one of our regional ski hills. You'll find some of the deepest snow (an annual average snowfall of 41 feet!) to shred out at Powder King, just a short trip north of Prince George. If you want the extreme treatment, call up Bearpaw Heli-skiing and book a weekend at their exclusive lodge, where you can explore 1.2 million acres of tenure.

When the snow flies, exchange your hiking boots for a pair of snowshoes and make tracks into the bush. Nordic skiing opportunities are limitless, from groomed trails to sparkling, snow-covered backcountry.

Switch on the engine and join brigades of local snowmobiling enthusiasts through hundreds of miles of groomed trails and prime backcountry sledding spots throughout the region. Want to stay in town but still feel a little excitement? Travel back to your childhood and go tobogganing at Carney Hill or Rainbow Park.

Are you a hockey fan? Catch the NHL stars of tomorrow with the Prince George Cougars at the CN Centre or the Spruce Kings at the historic Coliseum. Our arenas are also home to recreational hockey, speed skating and figure skating for all ages and levels. We also have dozens of community outdoor rinks for everyone to enjoy!

Searching for something a bit different? Try your hand at dog sledding - meet the dogs and take an exhilarating ride through frozen time.

Residents celebrate and embrace snow by attending the many winter light up festivals including the Northern Lights Festival, Christmas Tree Light Up, Railway & Forestry Museum Light Up, Festival of Trees, and the Kris Kringle Luncheon. The annual Winter Celebrations encourage residents and businesses to celebrate light with decorative, cultural and spiritual themes in the spirit of the season.

Our festivals such as ColdSnap Music Festival, SnowDaze and Festival D'Hiver guarantee your winter experience will be genuinely Canadian! Bustling craft fairs bring out the creativity in everyone - these are the places to buy unique holiday presents for family and friends.
